And God looked upon the children of Israel, and God had respect unto them (וַיַּרְא אֱלֹהִים אֶת־בְּנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל וַיֵּדַע אֱלֹהִים, vayar Elohim et-benei Yisra'el vayeda Elohim)—God looked (רָאָה, ra'ah) with attentive, compassionate regard, not mere observation.
