The Story

When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, Jesus went to his house and reclined at the table. A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume.

As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, 'If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.'

Jesus answered him, 'Simon, I have something to tell you... Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?'

Simon replied, 'I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.'

'You have judged correctly,' Jesus said. Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, 'Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You did not give me a kiss, but this woman has not stopped kissing my feet. You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.'

Then Jesus said to her, 'Your sins are forgiven... Your faith has saved you; go in peace.'

The Woman Who Cried at Jesus' Feet

Kids Version

A religious leader named Simon invited Jesus to dinner at his house. While they were eating, something unexpected happened.

A woman came in. Everyone knew her—she had done many bad things. People probably whispered and pointed at her.

But she didn't care. She walked right up to Jesus, crying SO hard that her tears fell on His feet!

She knelt down and wiped His feet with her HAIR. She kissed His feet. She poured expensive perfume on them.

Simon thought, 'If Jesus were really special, He'd know what kind of woman this is! He wouldn't let her touch Him!'

Jesus knew what Simon was thinking. He said, 'Simon, let Me tell you a story. Two people owed money. One owed a LOT—500 coins. One owed a little—50 coins. Neither could pay. But the lender forgave BOTH debts. Which person do you think loved the lender more?'

'The one who owed more, I guess,' Simon said.

'Right!' Jesus said. Then He pointed to the woman. 'Simon, when I came to your house, you didn't wash My feet or welcome Me properly. But this woman hasn't stopped washing My feet with tears and kissing them! She's shown SO much love because she's been forgiven SO much. People who think they don't need much forgiveness don't love much.'

Then Jesus looked at the woman with kind eyes. 'Your sins are forgiven. Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.'

No sin is too big for Jesus to forgive. When we understand how much we've been forgiven, we can't help but love Him back!
