The Story

That day when evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, 'Let us go over to the other side.' Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat.

A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion.

The disciples woke him and said to him, 'Teacher, don't you care if we drown?'

He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, 'Quiet! Be still!'

Then the wind died down and it was completely calm.

He said to his disciples, 'Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?'

They were terrified and asked each other, 'Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!'

The disciples were experienced fishermen who knew the Sea of Galilee well. For them to be terrified meant this was no ordinary storm. Yet Jesus slept peacefully through it all—not because He didn't care, but because He was never in danger.

With a word, He silenced the storm. The same voice that spoke creation into existence now commanded the chaos to cease. The disciples began to understand: this was no ordinary teacher.

Jesus Stops the Storm

Kids Version

Jesus and His disciples got in a boat to cross a big lake. Jesus was SO tired. He lay down in the back of the boat and fell asleep.

Then—WHOOOOSH!—a terrible storm came! The wind howled! CRASH! Huge waves slammed into the boat! Water was splashing in everywhere!

The disciples were TERRIFIED! Some of them were fishermen who knew this lake well. They knew this was a really bad storm!

'We're gonna sink! We're gonna drown!'

But Jesus was still sleeping! In the middle of all that noise and chaos!

The disciples shook Him awake. 'TEACHER! Don't You CARE if we drown?!'

Jesus stood up in the rocking boat. He looked at the wind. He looked at the waves.

'QUIET!' Jesus commanded. 'BE STILL!'

Immediately—the wind stopped. The waves calmed down. Everything was perfectly peaceful. Just like that!

Jesus turned to His disciples. 'Why were you so afraid? Don't you have faith?'

The disciples looked at each other with HUGE eyes. They weren't scared of the storm anymore—they were amazed at JESUS!

'Who IS this?' they whispered. 'Even the wind and waves OBEY Him!'

Jesus has power over everything—even storms! When life feels scary and out of control, remember: Jesus can calm any storm.
