"And led him away to Annas first" (καὶ ἤγαγον πρὸς Ἅνναν πρῶτον/kai ēgagon pros Hannan prōton)—the initial destination was Annas, not the current high priest Caiaphas. The adverb πρῶτον (prōton, "first") indicates a strategic preliminary hearing before the official trial.
