John's parenthetical comment recalls Caiaphas's unwitting prophecy: "it was expedient that one man should die for the people" (συμφέρει ἕνα ἄνθρωπον ἀποθανεῖν ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ/sympherei hena anthrōpon apothanein hyper tou laou).
