But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. The phrase 'before faith came' (pro tou elthein tēn pistin, πρὸ τοῦ ἐλθεῖν τὴν πίστιν) refers to the pre-Christian era, before Christ came and faith-righteousness was fully revealed.
