And the mountains shall be molten under him, and the valleys shall be cleft (venimasu heharim tachtav veha'amaqim yitbaqqa'u, וְנָמַסּוּ הֶהָרִים תַּחְתָּיו וְהָעֲמָקִים יִתְבַּקָּעוּ). This theophany depicts God's descent for judgment with catastrophic cosmic effects. Masas (מָסַס, "melt") describes solid matter liquefying—mountains, symbols of permanence and stability, dissolve like wax. Baqa (בָּקַע, "split/cleave") means violent rupturing—valleys tear apart.
