Jesus declares 'I am the true vine' (ego eimi he ampelos he alethine), using alethinos (true/genuine) to distinguish Himself from false or inadequate vines. In Old Testament imagery, Israel is God's vine (Psalm 80:8-16, Isaiah 5:1-7), but Israel proved faithless. Jesus is the true vine, fulfilling what Israel failed to be.
