And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod (וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו יְהוָה מַזֶּה בְיָדֶךָ וַיֹּאמֶר מַטֶּה)—God's question focuses Moses on what he already possesses.
