The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer (גֹּאֵל הַדָּם, go'el ha-dam)—the kinsman-redeemer bore responsibility to avenge murder and preserve family honor. This wasn't vigilante justice but divinely sanctioned family obligation (cf. Genesis 9:6).
