The chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus (ἐζήτουν κατὰ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ μαρτυρίαν, ezētoun kata tou Iēsou martyrian)—The verb ζητέω (zēteō) reveals their predetermined agenda: they were hunting for testimony, not truth.
