For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had. Jesus provides the theological explanation for His startling evaluation. The wealthy gave ek tou perisseuontos autois (ἐκ τοῦ περισσεύοντος αὐτοῖς, 'from their surplus/abundance')—from what exceeded their needs.
