When they cried unto the LORD, he put darkness between you and the Egyptians (וַיִּצְעֲקוּ אֶל־יְהוָה וַיָּשֶׂם מַאֲפֵל בֵּינֵיכֶם וּבֵין הַמִּצְרִים)—the verb tza'aq (צָעַק, to cry out in distress) describes desperate prayer in crisis.
