The king of Babylon smote them, and put them to death (וַיַּךְ אֹתָם...וַיְמִיתֵם)—execution, not merely captivity. The verb מוּת (death) is emphatic. In Riblah in the land of Hamath—northern Syria, symbolically far from the Promised Land.
