This verse contains one of the Old Testament's clearest Messianic prophecies. The 'righteous Branch' (tsemach tsaddiq, צֶמַח צַדִּיק) refers to a descendant from David's line who will perfectly fulfill the kingly calling that Judah's recent rulers had catastrophically failed.
