I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain. Paul's pastoral anxiety. "I am afraid of you" (phoboumai hymas, φοβοῦμαι ὑμᾶς)—literally "I fear concerning you." Not fear of them but fear for them—alarm at their spiritual trajectory. "Lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain" (mē pōs eikē kekopiaka eis hymas)—that his missionary labors among them might prove fruitless.
