But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath—The Hebrew bekhor (firstborn) carries legal and theological weight throughout Scripture. The pi shenayim ("double portion," literally "mouth of two") means the firstborn receives twice what other sons receive, not two-thirds of the estate.
