Whoso killeth any person, the murderer shall be put to death by the mouth of witnesses (עַל־פִּי עֵדִים, al-pi edim)—literally 'upon the mouth of witnesses.' Capital punishment required eyewitness testimony, not circumstantial evidence or hearsay.
