And it came to pass on the morrow, that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. Israel built an altar at Bethel despite the ark and tabernacle being present with their existing altar. The Hebrew mizbeach (מִזְבֵּחַ, "altar") suggests this was an additional altar, possibly indicating their desperation to seek atonement for the near-extinction of Benjamin.
