It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger—Paul quotes Genesis 25:23 (LXX: ho meizōn doulesei tō elassoni, ὁ μείζων δουλεύσει τῷ ἐλάσσονι). The Hebrew rab ya'avod tsa'ir (רַב יַעֲבֹד צָעִיר) literally means 'the greater shall serve the lesser.' This reverses natural order (primogeniture) and human expectation. Esau, the firstborn, should inherit; instead, Jacob receives the blessing and covenant promises.
