The historical detail that the pit where Ishmael disposed of bodies was 'that which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel' connects this atrocity to Israel's divided monarchy history three centuries earlier (1 Kings 15:16-22). King Asa (911-870 BC) fortified Mizpah as a northern defensive position against Baasha of Israel, building infrastructure including large cisterns for siege water storage.
