Verses 1-6: The Prophecy and Sign Against the Altar. A man of God from Judah prophesies against the altar at Bethel, predicting Josiah's future judgment and demonstrating God's power through a miraculous sign that the altar will be torn apart and ashes poured out. King Jeroboam's hand withers when he attempts to seize the prophet but is restored after prayer.
Verses 7-10: The Man of God's Refusal to Eat or Drink. Jeroboam invites the man of God to his house, but the prophet refuses, citing God's command not to eat, drink, or return by the same route.
Verses 11-19: The Deception of the Old Prophet. An old prophet from Bethel hears of the man of God's actions, pursues him, and lies by claiming an angel instructed him to bring the man of God back to eat and drink, leading to the prophet's disobedience.
Verses 20-26: The Judgment on the Man of God. God pronounces judgment on the man of God for disobedience, predicting he will not be buried in his ancestral tomb. He is killed by a lion, fulfilling the prophecy.
Verses 27-32: The Burial and Prophecy of the Old Prophet. The old prophet retrieves the body, buries it, and prophesies the certainty of the judgment against the altar and high places.
Verses 33-34: The Continued Sin of Jeroboam. Despite the warnings, Jeroboam persists in his idolatry, consecrating unqualified priests, which becomes a sin leading to the destruction of his house.
