About the Book of Titus
The Letter to Titus serves as Paul's practical guide for establishing robust churches amid a challenging cultural environment. Penned between AD 63 and 65, shortly after Paul’s release from his initial Roman imprisonment recorded in Acts 28, this epistle is directed to Titus, a trusted Gentile companion whom Paul left on the island of Crete. Crete was widely known in antiquity for its moral corruption. Even a native poet, Epimenides, whom Paul cites in Titus 1:12, famously described the Cretans as 'always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons'—a scathing portrayal of their habitual dishonesty, violence, and excess. Into this difficult context, the gospel had been introduced, and Titus was tasked with the formidable responsibility of organizing the churches by appointing godly leaders, confronting false teachers, and nurturing communities that embody the transformative power of God’s grace.
