About the Book of Lamentations
Lamentations is Scripture’s most extended and heartrending portrayal of sorrow over the effects of sin and the certainty of divine judgment. Composed shortly after Jerusalem’s fall to Babylon in 586 BC, this brief collection of five poetic laments articulates the indescribable anguish of witnessing God’s holy city devastated—the temple reduced to ashes, the people killed or taken captive, and the covenant community left desolate. Traditionally credited to the prophet Jeremiah, who mourned Jerusalem for four decades as he foretold its downfall, Lamentations serves as his mournful dirge over the ruined city.
