About the Book of Ecclesiastes

Ecclesiastes offers the Bible’s most candid and unvarnished exploration of life experienced solely from an earthly viewpoint—what the writer calls life 'under the sun.' This phrase captures existence without reference to God’s revelation or eternal realities. Known in Hebrew as 'Qoheleth,' meaning the Preacher or Assembler, the book wrestles with the seeming futility, injustice, and emptiness that mark human life in a fallen creation. The Preacher’s refrain—"vanity of vanities, all is vanity"—uses the Hebrew term *hebel* (meaning vapor, breath, or fleetingness) thirty-eight times to emphasize the transient and ultimately unsatisfying nature of human pursuits when they are sought as ends in themselves.
